Revving Up
I was sitting in a week of training in New York City for a job I had not yet landed. There were approximately 3000 of us. One of the speakers asked us, "How many of you don't have a job with the Board of Ed yet?" About 1,000 of raised our hands. My competition.
I had moved to the city a week earlier, with no job and everything I owned in my car. It was a little overwhelming to look around the room that day.
A bit later, a UFT (union) rep got up and began to raffle off Broadway tickets to Scrooge. Something stirred in me, and I knew that I knew that I knew that I would win the tickets. It was as if God dropped a gift of faith in me and whispered, "This will be my sign to you that you will get a job---you have to be here in November to see the play." Sure enough, I won the tickets and got the first job I applied for.
Maybe you've heard the expression, "God doesn't moved parked cars." It means sometimes you have to act before you'll know for sure that you're going the right way and doing the right thing.
I had felt called to NYC since I was 13. I had gone on a short term mission trip when I was 17, and every cell in my body LONGED for New York with an urgency that defies explanation almost. I had waited, and prayed and sought counsel. Even so, I had doubt about my timing until the moment I won the Scrooge tickets.
I've been in a place lately of waiting for direction. I've been a parked car, waiting for God to come move me. Time to get up, start moving, and let Him breathe life as I go.
